Syria: Twelve years of suffering

The crisis in Syria began in March 2011, unleashing a previously unimaginable escalation of hardship which to date has continued unabated. The ongoing crisis has inflicted terrible suffering upon millions of Syrian people, with almost 6 million registered as refugees in various countries across the globe. Donations to the Syria crisis appeal will help save lives.

For over a decade, the people of Syria have been suffering the devastating consequences of war with seemingly no end in sight. A generation of children are growing up knowing nothing but war.

Four deadly earthquakes of 6.3, 6.4 and 4.7 magnitude hit Afghanistan this past week, taking the lives of up to 2,000 people so far and leaving thousands injured.

The earthquake struck 40km northwest of the city of Herat in Afghanistan, where 12 villages near the city of Herat have been affected.

Hundreds of homes were flattened amid the earthquake. There have been reports that families were buried inside the destroyed homes.

More than 3,000 homes have been completely destroyed and the number of people directly affected has risen to more than 40,000, with many families now homeless and in need of aid.

Charity Project PK is on the ground supporting the people of Syria

Charity Project PK continues to stand with the people of Syria and have supported nearly 12 million people through humanitarian programmes. Since the onset of the crisis, we have provided emergency relief and humanitarian aid to vulnerable people across the country, as well as refugee communities in neighbouring countries such as IraqLebanonJordan and Turkey.

With your support, we have been able to:

Over the years we have been able to save millions of lives, but as the conflict rages on, we still urgently need your support. Please donate to our Syria Appeal and help save lives.

How your donations are helping people in Syria

As well as providing vital food aid, Charity Project PK is also delivering lifesaving healthcare interventions. We are running healthcare facilities such as mobile emergency units, health centres and specialist dialysis centres, and have also established and supported the only heart surgery centre. In addition, in 2020 we provided medical items that are vital in many healthcare settings, including:

Charity Project PK is also at the forefront of the response to the Covid-19 outbreak. We have delivered awareness-raising activities in primary healthcare centres. As part of efforts to reduce the spread of coronavirus, we gave 84 health facilities personal protective equipment (PPE) including masks, gloves, and medical gowns, as well as no-contact thermometers, hand disinfectant gels, disinfectant sprays and other sterilisation solutions. As a result, thousands of people were able to access free healthcare services.

This centre is a source of pride for us and the whole world. The post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), continued trauma and continuous displacement that I have faced are the reason my health has suffered so badly...Thank God, I am in the best health now. The feeling is indescribable. I thank Charity Project PK.

Ahmed, from Kafr Nabl, who had a heart condition that was being worsened by stress. the 75-year-old became the first patient to receive specialist surgery at the only heart surgery centre in northern Syria, which was established and supported by Charity Project PK as part of efforts to support Syria’s collapsing healthcare sector. It has made a huge difference to his health.

Charity Project PK healthcare interventions include a project to provide healthcare to over 1.2 million people in the region. Alongside running healthcare facilities, we provide wages to healthcare staff, essential training and support with running costs. We also offer transport for those who would not otherwise be able to travel to healthcare facilities, and have set up referral systems between healthcare facilities.

Your donations are rebuilding lives

With many people losing their lives, grandparents have found themselves becoming the sole carers for their orphaned grandchildren. This is a reality that Abu Ziyad knows all too well.

Having lost his son when his village was bombed, he’s now caring for his orphaned grandchildren alone. The family have witnessed many horrors and Abu Ziyad also lost his livelihood.

However, with the support of Charity Project PK who provided Abu Ziyad with pregnant ewes to produce milk to be sold at market. This opportunity allowed him to earn enough income to buy food to support his young family and enjoy fresh and nutritious dairy products every day.

Your support has enabled us to support families to build a reliable source of income upon which they can depend. Read more about Abu Ziyad’s story and how we help him earn a living here.
